How to take pictures of a car to sell: the 12-shot list

Twelve photos, in the order buyers look at a car, all on a phone. Shown with real photos from dealers’ lots.

Shot 1, the front three-quarter: the photo that leads a listing. A dealer’s own photo.

The short answer

Shoot the car clean, in soft daylight, from the same height all the way round: the front three-quarter first, then the front, both sides, the rear three-quarter, the back, the inside, and close-ups of anything a buyer will ask about, flaws included.

  • Twelve photos cover a listing; add more for anything special.
  • Hold the phone level, at about headlight height, in landscape.
  • Show the flaws. A buyer who finds one you hid stops trusting the rest.

Before you shoot

  • Wash it, vacuum it, empty it: no air fresheners, papers or phone mounts.
  • Soft light: an overcast day, or early morning or late afternoon. Noon sun throws hard reflections.
  • A plain background: an empty corner of the lot, away from other cars and signs.
  • Wipe the lens and use the 1x camera; step back rather than switching to the wide one.
  • Turn the front wheels so the rim faces the camera for the first shot.

The 12 shots, in order

  1. 2017 Kia Optima in dark blue, front three-quarter view from the driver side, on a dealer’s lot.

    1

    Front three-quarter

The lead photo. Stand off a front corner, so the face and the side show together.

  2. 2017 Kia Optima in dark blue, straight-on front view, on a dealer’s lot.

    2

    Front

Straight on and centred, the whole car in the frame.

  3. 2017 Kia Optima in dark blue, driver-side profile, on a dealer’s lot.

    3

    Driver side

The full profile, with the camera at the middle of the car.

  4. 2017 Kia Optima in dark blue, rear three-quarter view from the driver side, on a dealer’s lot.

    4

    Rear three-quarter

Off a back corner, the same distance as the first shot.

  5. Black 2019 Cadillac XT4, straight-on rear view, on a dealer’s outdoor lot.

    5

    Rear

Straight on from behind, the plate area and the lights level.

  6. 2017 Kia Optima in dark blue, passenger-side profile, on a dealer’s lot.

    6

    Passenger side

The other profile. Buyers check both sides for dents.

  7. Black 2019 Cadillac XT4, the dash and steering wheel from the driver’s seat, looking out through the windshield.

    7

    Dash from the driver’s seat

The buyer’s view: the wheel, the screen and the road ahead.

  8. The km, and no warning lights

    8

    Odometer, engine on

Shows the km, and that no warning lights are on.

  9. From the open driver’s door

    9

    Front seats

From the open driver’s door: the seats and the console.

  10. Fold the seats for one

    10

    Back seats and cargo

Families buy space. Fold the seats down for one photo.

  11. A wheel and the tread

    11

    Wheels and tires

One close-up of a wheel, and one of the tread.

  12. Scratches, chips, curb rash

    12

    Every flaw, close up

Each scratch, chip and scuff, with its own photo.

Shots 1 to 4 and 6: a dealer’s 2017 Kia Optima. Shots 5 and 7: a dealer’s 2019 Cadillac XT4. Dealers’ own photos, no AI.

Five things to get right

  • Only the car in the frame: no other cars, no signs, not your own reflection.
  • Headlight height, not standing height, or the roof looks big and the car small.
  • The 1x camera: the wide 0.5x one stretches the car.
  • Dry, clean glass and a dusted dash.
  • Every flaw shown. Buyers find them at the test drive anyway.

What StudioOS needs to make a reel

A few of the photos above, or the car’s listing link. StudioOS’s Studio style films four shots, in order: the cover coming off, the full car, the interior and the details. Photos of the outside and the inside give it what it needs, and your price and km go on from what you type, never from the AI. Can car dealers use AI photos in ads?

Questions

  • At least the twelve here: six of the outside, the dash, the odometer, the seats, the cargo space, a wheel and every flaw. More if the car has something special.

  • The front three-quarter: from off a front corner, so the face and the side show together. Lead with it.

  • Soft light: an overcast day, or early morning and late afternoon. Noon sun throws hard reflections on the paint.

  • Yes, each with its own close-up. Buyers find them anyway, and a flaw you showed costs less trust than one they found.

  • Yes. A recent phone, held level, in soft light, is enough for a listing.
